Almost one year to the day after she had been recruited as a spy by her cousin, Lady Elinora Wellesley found herself sitting on her horse atop a hill overlooking a valley that should have been full of British redcoats, but was not.

She peered through her pocket telescope, hoping to see a flash of red at the far end of the valley that would indicate the imminent arrival of the wayward British forces. All she could see was an empty road. Irritated, she collapsed her telescope and returned it to her purse. Something had obviously Gone Wrong, but this must surely be a temporary state. Sooner or later she would make contact with a British advance unit, to whose officer she would identify herself. And shortly thereafter she would deliver her intelligence on the wily French to cousin Arthur.

Elinora's stomach growled. The loud noise caused her servant Josefina to smile. They had skipped breakfast to make this rendezvous in time. Elinora's disappointment that no one was here to meet her was outweighed, for the moment, by her hunger. Fortunately they had recently passed through a village, which Josefina had named as San Cristobal. Elinora could still see it from the hilltop. She knew they could purchase breakfast and be back here within the hour, by which time, she hoped, the valley would be full of His Majesty's troops.

"We'll dine there, Josefina," Elinora said, gesturing at the village. "Then we shall see what we shall see. Go on ahead, I'll join you directly."
