“Hip, violent and funny vignettes of the mean streets of southeast London tie together this rowdy set of short novels” from the Irish crime writer (Publishers Weekly).
At sixty-two, Chief Inspector Roberts is nearly too old to be a cop, but he makes up for his age with a ferocity that the younger detectives cannot match. After four decades on the force, he has a daughter who hates him, a wife who cheats, and a bank account that grows emptier every year. But on London’s darker streets, Roberts is a force to be reckoned with.

After four decades on the force, he has a daughter who hates him, a wife who cheats, and a bank account that grows emptier every year. But on London’s darker streets, Roberts is a force to be reckoned with.
With his partner, the gleefully brutal Detective Sergeant Brant, Roberts looks for every policeman’s dream the White Arrest, a high-profile success that makes up for all their past failures. In A White Arrest, their target is a bat-wielding lunatic who knocks off drug dealers. In Taming the Alien, they hunt a mysterious hit man who earned his nickname by carrying out a hit while watching Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic. And in The McDead, Roberts and Brant set their sights on a cunning kingpin ruling London’s southeast side. Gripping and gritty, Ken Bruen’s White Trilogy is an unforgettable noir portrait of London’s seedy underworld.

These three "novella" length books are quick, action filled, totally un-PC, and very humorous. The main characters, Chief Inspector John Roberts and Detective Sergeant Tom Brant are, to say the least, two peas from the same unconventional method of police work pod. While CI Roberts tries to do things according to the book, with lapses here and there if it means collaring a perp, DS Brant is...well, I'll let the author tell you: "Brant was like a pit-bull. You saw him and the word 'pugnacious' leapt to mind. It fitted. His hair was in galloping recession and what remained was cut to the skull. Dark eyes over a nose that had been broken at least twice. A full sensual mouth that hinted at gentility if not gentleness. Neither applied. He was 5' 8" and powerfully built. Not from the gym but rather from a smoldering rage. Over a drink he'd admit: 'I was born angry and got worse.' " Over a drink? More likely three and counting. Both Brant and Roberts, forever on the outs with their superior, Superintendent Brown, drink heavily (except when they're on duty, during which they only drink whenever they're near a pub in the pursuit of justice). The higher ups at the Southeast branch of the London Metropolitan Police Force wish they'd go away, or get caught doing something illegal that would get them sacked. Not bloody well likely.Well, I think that someone who enjoys reading entertaining, fast-paced, noir police procedural books set in the seamy side of London will thoroughly enjoy THE WHITE TRILOGY. If, after finishing these fun stories about the adventures of Roberts and Brant, you need more, author Ken Bruen has continued their unorthodox style of apprehending the bad guys and gals in the "Inspector Brant" series: BLITZ, VIXEN, CALIBRE, and AMMUNITION. You'll have to read them in order so you will understand what's going on when R&B refer to a previous incident or person. I highly recommend them all. 5 Stars

The White Trilogy A White Arrest Taming the Alien and The McDead edition by Ken Bruen Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I am one of the many readers that discovered Bruen through his Jack Taylor series and was hooked forever. Since I have devoured all his books in that series, it was time to expand my horizons while I waited for the next installment. That is how I ended up getting the first three books in the Brant and Roberts series. What I found was a noir that is as raw as noir can be, delivering a myriad of characters, with none of them being the good guy or gal. I am used to Bruen using the anti-hero as his protagonist in the Jack Taylor series, and here we get a couple of cops that epitomize the dirty cop. Especially Brant, who abuses his power like there is no tomorrow.
In the start of the first book, the author uses a series of short passages to deliver the story. We are constantly jumping from one scene to the next, and it gets a little while to get used to figuring out who is participating in the scene and how it connects to everything else that is going on. At first it can be confusing and frustrating, but I recommend you keep at it because the final result is extremely rewarding. Also, don't expect the plot of these novels to revolve around investigating the crime, since that is not what these works are about. It is almost as if the cases the duo is working on are an excuse to show us everything else that is going on in the lives of these characters. We get to see details of their personal lives and relationships and these end up being the focal point of the story.
Besides Brant and Roberts, we get a collection of characters that are enthralling. Each of these adds something to the enjoyment of these stories and by the end of the trilogy you will cherish them. Or at least those that make it to the end.
As always, Ken Bruen delivers a work that truly diverges from the well-known paths. He does not conform to what others have done in the genre. There are some similarities; in particular Brant is obsessed with the novels of McBain, but Bruen always delivers a breath of fresh air. Well maybe sometimes the air is fetid, but you still appreciate it. Those that love all types of books, like I do, will certainly enjoy the constant references to other authors and specific works throughout this story. I have found some hidden gems by looking up authors Bruen mentions in his Taylor series, and I hope I end up finding more in this one.
I have to say I am completely hooked by this series. In my eyes, Bruen is an absolute master!
I read this omnibus featuring DS Tom Brant and co. in about a day and a half. There are seven books in the series in total and I am at book six already. The the first three stories in this edition are set in 1990's SE London and follow the cops at the Met and we see their everyday working life of bribery, in office fighting, politics, racism, bigotry and street crime. Tom Brant, the lead character in this series represents all that is wrong with society in being a raging hard ass homophobe and racist yet the author gives him some redemptive qualities. That's why this series works with him in it. The storyline features some extreme cases of human degradation and makes some social criticisms about the media and the public's consumption with violence and man's other vices like greed. There's a couple of jabs at the government but nothing preachy. All the characters are flawed, making them believable. The pace is fast thanks to the multiple story lines throughout to keep you interested. These are not lengthy novels and are addictive reads. I love this series and love Brant as well. The bonus for readers who read Ken Bruen is the writers he quotes at the top of each chapter. Bruen lives and breathes crime fiction and he has a poetic style that is wonderful to read. His voice is immersive and dark and harsh in imparting the truth about society's ills. I love it.
